Why Work With Us?

We have the skill and experience of a large scale firm in a boutique package. Our small size allows us to be specific about the projects that we take on, focus on our area of expertise, and provide our clients with a collaborative team focused on the success of your project. We have developed a unique set of workshops throughout the design process to create an atmosphere of lively conversation and dialogue to achieve your project together. These collaborations will help advance the design to the next level and will help to make the project uniquely yours! The more that you participate at these key points, the fewer questions will come up along the way, and the less potential there is for redesign. Our clients’ success is our success!

Project Brief Refinement

CGLA has developed this unique first step in our design process which is crucial to the success of any project. During this phase we will eliminate the ambiguities in a project brief. Ambiguities in a project brief cause designers to pad their fee proposals to cover these ‘unknowns’, or they define a laundry list of exclusions which result in additional services down the road. We can help you to explore and refine your project program and project brief in order to minimize your risk of additional service fees later down the road.

Concept Design

During the conceptual design stage, we explore the relationship between the project site and the surrounding project context – location, connections to other places, etc. This is the deep dive into the site analysis and feasible design options. During this phase we are exploring innovative concepts that work towards the broad goals and objectives defined during the Project Brief Refinement Phase of work. During this phase we will typically explore several design options in order to narrow in on the right design for you and your project.

Schematic Design

During the Schematic Design, we utilize the selected Concept Design Scheme and begin to refine the elements of the project. We review possible design options within the framework of the selected scheme – continually testing ideas and iterations against the Project Brief. Collaboration with the Client Team and other Design Team Consultants is critical to the success of the project, as this phase of work if really solidifies the design scheme and the project formulation.

Design Development

During the Design Development, the project really comes to life! We will refine the design of each of the elements of the project, making sure that the scale and materiality of all parts comes together to make something greater than each element individually. We will guide you through all of the critical decisions, including material selections and planting selections, which give the project the nuance and refinement to really pop.

Construction Documents

The Construction Document Phase of work is the beginning of your project implementation phase. It is at this critical juncture that we define how the project will be constructed. While we have worked through general constructability issues during the design phase, it is during the construction documents phase that we create documents that tell the contractor how the elements all come together, and we eliminate many surprises during construction. Without this critical step, the design cannot come to life.

This is your time to sit back and see how the contractors will build your project.

Construction Observation

During Construction Observation you watch your project come to life!
While you are watching the magic happen, we will be working with you or your representative to ensure that the construction meets the documentation and the project meets all of our expectations. This involves weekly conference calls, site visits, hand picking plant material, and reviewing contractor submissions.

There are always events that happen during construction that are out of our control – weather delays, unavailable plants of a particular species, etc We are committed to working with the team to navigate our way through any issues in order to deliver the project.

The design teams review of the project during the construction process is critical to the appearance of the final project. If the project isn’t implemented correctly, it doesn’t matter how good the design and documents were!

Client | Design Team Workshops

CGLA has developed a unique set of WORKSHOPS to create an atmosphere where there is lively conversation and dialogue to achieve your project together. The WORKSHOPS are designed at key points in the design process where the dialogue will help advance the design to the next level and will help to make the project uniquely yours!

The more that you participate at these key points in the process, the fewer questions will come up along the way and the less potential there is for redesign.
