Constitution Gardens on the National Mall, Washington D.C.

This competition-winning redesign respectfully regenerates a historically sensitive Modernist landscape for the 21st Century.

In collaboration with Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers, we developed a scheme that adheres to the original design principles but is updated to reflect current functional and cultural needs as well as create a more sustainable site that will be the first of its kind on the National Mall.

Rolling topography becomes an opportunity to capture and filter stormwater while mitigating traffic noise from outside the park. Turf is replaced with flowering meadows that can be mown for events. The iconic, biomorphic lake is deepened and contoured to create a viable lake ecosystem as well as provide geothermal cooling for the new pavilion. The graceful curves of the lake edge are emphasized with a graphic display of aquatic and emergent plants that clean and filter the water, and a new basin adjacent to the pavilion can be used for winter ice skating, summer model boating, and as a performance space in the spring and fall through subtle adjustment in the water level.

The pavilion will anchor the east end of the site and provide year-round activation of the park with a restaurant, grab-and-go café, ice skate rental, model boat rental, and restrooms.

On the north east corner of the site, the existing Lockkeepers House is being relocated and renovated and will act as an interpretive center for the National Mall.
